Traditional removable dentures are composed of a combination of soft and hard plastics to recreate the surfaces needed for speaking and chewing. Dentures sit over and above the gum tissue, and rely on pressure from the gums to create the biting and chewing movements. Since the shape and density of the gums and bones change over time, dentures need to be relined or replaced every few years in order to fit well.
Dentures do take some time to get used to, since they don’t function like natural teeth. However, most patients find they can use them with confidence with just a few weeks of adjustment.
Implant-supported dentures are different from standard dentures in that they replace the whole tooth, root to crown. Titanium implants are surgically embedded in the jaw bone and a denture is attached directly to the implants. This creates a more comfortable-feeling prosthetic, that functions like natural teeth. Because the pressure is supplied by the jaw (not the gums) there is no friction against the oral tissues and no discomfort.
Dentists always recommend implants when possible, because they are better for your oral health than standard dentures. They create less irritation of the oral tissues and they maintain the health of your jaw bone. Patients who choose implants can rest easy knowing they will not experience any jawbone deterioration as the years pass, as implants prevent this process.
This is a denture that is essentially attached to either two dental implants or two mini-implants. You can see how this option helps to stabilize and retain the denture in the mouth. The denture will actually “click” into the two positions. Old dentures (or your existing denture) can usually be retro-fit to accommodate this new denture. This is the second best denture option for long term use. At Atlanta Dental Spa we believe almost all lower dentures should be an overdenture, because otherwise the denture will flop around, making it difficult to speak, eat, and talk.
– When you get your new denture, it is advised to start with soft food first and gradually increase the consistency of your food over time.
– You will have to come back for minor adjustments during the initial period to relieve any sore spots.
– You must leave your denture out of your mouth at night time to let your tissues recover.
– For cleaning dentures only use professional denture cleaning solutions or tablets.
